Workshop on 17th Cent. Italian Dances

Main Course: July 20>29 9.00am-1.00pm

Theacher: Lieven Baert
Level: Basic, Intermediate, Advanced

Program:

FROM RECONSTRUCTION to CHOREOGRAPHY ( Italian dances and dance music 1580 -1650 ) From Negri, to Monteverdi, Kapsberger, Falconieri and Frescobaldi.

Thanks to 4 dance treatises of Negri, Caroso (2) and Santucci we have an idea on the choreographies which where danced in Italy around 1600. These books include also a vast amount of dance steps, variations for gagliarde and canario to get inspired and creative when it comes to creation.

Especially Cesare Negri left us some theatrical dances in his treatise “Le Gratie d’ Amore“ of 1602. We will dance and reconstruct them in the morning and analyse them in the reconstruction class in the afternoon.

Another part of the morning class will be dedicated to dance music of Kapsberger, Frescobaldi and Falconieri. This excellent music has no written choreography. So it’s up to me to create a new dance partiture. This working process will be also discussed in the afternoon reconstruction class.

The Afternoon workshop will continue in the same spirit because we have to create some dances from the Opera “ Orfeo “ : This workshop is intended for dancers who want to work towards a small performance at the end of the summer school, in the concert ‘Differenti tipi d’amore’ dedicated to Monteverdi’s operas and directed by R. Alessandrini.
